Writer identification is the task of finding the writer of a specific document. It helps forensic experts in taking their decisions regarding the authenticity of a questioned document. This international contest on Arabic writing identification AWI 2011 is organized by the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Research Group PRIP at Qatar University in conjunction with the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition ICDAR2011. Writer identification is not an easy problem, because a writer never reproduces the same text exactly alike. However, the difference in the writing style within one writer is generally less meaningful comparing to the difference between two different writers. Writer identification is also a very active research field. In the ICDAR2009 conference, at least 8 papers deal with writer identification and in the ICFHR2010, not less than 6 papers address also this research area. However, to the extent of our knowledge, never a competition has been organized in this field. The aim of this competition is to allow researchers and industries in writer identification or related fields to compare the performances of their systems on a new unpublished data. We invite all researchers in writer identification or related fields to participate to this competition. The winner of this contest will be honored at a special session in ICDAR’2011. Moreover, Qatar University awards $1000 for the winning team. Results must however be replicated by Qatar University to be eligible for this prize money. Participation does not require you to attend ICDAR2011. Note: The competition is now over. See the final results.
